Hi, my name is Eric Ryman. I have an article coming out in Fire Engineering on vent inner search. Today, I want to focus specifically on the importance of the door control component in vent inner search.
Fire Dynamics and Flow Path
In this demonstration using a simulated flashpoint prop, we have a fire occurring on the first floor, with flames lapping up towards the second floor. A second-floor window is utilized along with a ladder to show how fire extends into different areas of a structure.
As the firefighter ascends the ladder and breaks the glass of the second-floor window, this action creates a direct flow path for the fire. This unidirectional flow path can have significant implications for firefighting tactics and victim rescue efforts.
Impact of Door Control
Upon entering the second-floor window, and with the door to the room closed, the firefighter effectively isolates that room from the fire’s influence. This isolation leads to:
- A significant reduction in fire intensity and flow.
- Lower temperatures inside the room.
- Improved visibility due to smoke clearing.
- Fresh air being introduced into the space.
These factors greatly enhance the survival chances of any civilians trapped inside the room. The proper execution of door control during a vent inner search is critical for both fire suppression and rescue operations.
Thanks for tuning in and watching the video.
