Hi, my name is Jake Jorgensson, the lieutenant with Watertown Fire Rescue. There are thousands of fire departments throughout the country, ranging from huge metropolitan down to small rural volunteer fire departments. One thing that every fire department has in common is their communities expect them to perform at a moment’s notice.
However, some of these fire departments may not be able to meet the staffing requirements set by the NFPA. How are they still able to perform without being able to meet these standards?
Effective Strategies for Fire Departments
A few simple ways that they can be effective are:
- Create a Baseline Plan: Establishing a fundamental strategy that outlines procedures and protocols can help guide responses during emergencies.
- Learn How to Prioritize Incidents: Understanding which incidents require immediate attention and which can be managed with available resources is crucial for effective response.
- Maximize Resources on Scene: Finding ways to do the most good with the resources available can significantly enhance operational effectiveness, even in the face of staffing challenges.
